As Costa Rica excels in natural resources, so does it shine in the sphere of art and culture. Many historical sites are found in the downtown area; the National Museum is housed in the old Bellavista Fort, once home to the now-abolished army. The elegant National Theater, a replica of the Paris Opera House, was built in the 1890s from funds raised by coffee growers. The National Art Museum occupies the old terminal building of the country's original airport. Many other museums preserve and display the varied facets of our natural and cultural heritage.

Works in precious woods, coffee roots, banana paper, gold, clay and other materials are meticulously crafted by our local artisans: replicas of pre-Columbian art, indigenous pottery, jewelry, masks, or, perhaps the best known of our typical souvenirs, the colorful hand-painted oxcart.

Costa Rica hosts several renowned festivals throughout the year: music concerts, vibrant street carnivals, modern dance, drama and horse parades. During these times, the streets become filled with joyous crowds who project the fervor of a friendly and happy people.
